Hailing from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is the band The Basement Paintings, whose new full-length Antipodes captures the band’s epic blend of ambient, post-punk, and post-rock tendencies. Opening track “Instinct” maps the band’s sound well, evolving from spacious ambient beginnings to a very involved, reverberating vein of instrumental guitar-heavy rock. The soaring guitar tones excel with particularly emotive glory around the 02:30 mark, when a sweltering backing distortion exudes a metal-like quality. 07:40 sees a shift to a more menacing guitar tone unveiled, helping close off this memorable track with an enjoyable fervor.
