Nyxem – “Ra in Thy Rising”

Nyxem is a project that creatively features guitar work in the metal and prog niches, intertwined with a synthwave approach. The solo project of San Diego-based composer Jonah Hontos, Nyxem impresses with this aesthetic throughout new album Behind the Veil of Light. Power is apparent from the get-go with opener “Ra in Thy Rising,” a riveting effort riding on excitable guitar lines that ascend alongside synth-laden whirring to a culminating breakdown around 01:40. Ceaseless in its synth/guitar correspondence and energy, “Ra in Thy Rising” is nicely representative of the energy and style to expect throughout this interesting, consuming album.
