small dogs – “dar es salaam”

“dar es salaam” shows a reflective, chilled-out vibe that consumes. The track comes from small dogs, the project of George Barnett, a London-born artist who resides in NYC. “It’s the summer of love,” Barnett repeats throughout, accompanied initially by a delicate backing vocal reflection and patiently enveloping soundscape. Minimalist percussion emerges thereafter, with a bass-y resonance amidst trickling guitars around 01:20 playing with delight. “dar es salaam” unfolds with an understated beauty, making a surefire success from small dogs.

The track came to life during a winter session at Wise Tree Studios, alongside producer and Barnett’s childhood friend, Rich Bond. Per the artist: “a basic groove and a series of textures were made but had no obvious home. With lockdown came a longing for summer and freedom and these fragments then began to make sense. After endless WeTransfers, Zoom calls and late nights of collaboration between NYC and Liverpool, ‘dar es salaam’ was born.”

“dar es salaam” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of October 2020’ Spotify playlist.
