How Folk Music Has Changed From Campsites To Radio

The Sound Of Folk Music To Educate

Traditional folk music comes to us from history and prehistory. It was a way of transferring information as well as making arduous tasks more enjoyable. During these early times of humanity, not everyone was privileged enough to have schooling. Meaning that not everyone could always read and write. Singing was thus a great way to teach

The medium of folk music was used by tribal elders to teach the younger generation of their history. This is true of almost every indigenous culture on earth. The stories that were passed through the medium of music related to their way of living in every aspect. Their history as well as their spirituality. But time changed and so did the sound of folk music.

Folk Music to Lighten The Load

A time in our history that we now only see in museums came where one group of people always sought dominion over another group. This can be seen throughout history, as one group of people conquered another group and claimed their land for themselves. Very often during these conquests, the indigenous peoples were kept on as slave workers. Folk music became incredibly important.

Folk music became a way of keeping in touch with one’s roots while working in a place where you have been forcefully removed from your way of live. Besides for this, it became a way of making work that was intense, pass by quicker. It often kept the rhythm of which the people had to work by to have a productive day. But folk music changed again.

Folk Revival

In the mid-20th century, folk music caught the attention of many musical artists. The revival movement of folk music was manly started in The United States of America. Artists combined the sounds of various folk songs to create their own stories that we would carry forward. One of the most iconic sounds of folk – that distinguishes it from most other forms of music – is a catchy or moving tune with lyrics that are easy to sing along with.

During the 1930’s the second folk music revival hit the world with a storm. One of the first artists to grab the beautiful sounds of folk was Woody Guthrie. He not only sang traditional folk songs but also composed songs of his own. Since then, many artists have taken to the sound of folk music. But the beauty of folk is that the sound is unique to the person.

Folk Music Activism

Due to the fact that Folk music has such a moving sound and the lyrics often speaks to the soul of the person who is listening, it stirs emotions. The lyrics speak of real issues and songwriters use their song to address things that are important. Many folk music singers’ and performers have gone on to be activists in the fields that interest them.

Folk music makes you want to laugh and cry all at the same time a bit like when you signup to play online. It moves the soul through an invisible hand that climbs into your chest and makes your heart pump again and forget about the day of work that has passed. Folk music will always be with us and will always adapt and evolve to serve our individual needs for it.
