New Jersey-based artist Tyler Elden concocts a gripping, emotive rock sound on “Our Good Name.” The passionate vocals and devastating guitar-driven hooks remind fondly of artists like The Wrens and Matthew Good Band. Per the artist, the track “tells the downtrodden story of a family being cast out of their community, and the future of an unborn child.”

Elden’s vocal presence compels in its initial heaviness and eventual cohesion, with gentle guitars and steady percussion driving to a more rock-forward energy with tones of grunge and alternative within the “my cross to bear,” escalation. “I am becoming a ghost,” Elden lets out into a resonating hook, with spine-chilling keys complementing into a rousing rock sequence that falls into the reflective verses. “Our Good Name” is a gripping rocker throughout, impressing with its tonal variety, powerful vocal work, and ensuing momentum.

The release represents a collaboration between Elden, Katie (of Philadelphia-based rock collective The Lunar Year), and producers/engineers Matt Weber (Sweet Pill) and Christopher Hawthorne (Francesca Blanchard).

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of January 2023’ Spotify playlist.
