Miners and Gardeners – “Thinning”

//

Driving from jangly moroseness into a rousing synth-touched rock catharsis, “Thinning” is a new single from Miners and Gardeners, the Minneapolis-based project of Dan Mynes. Describing the release as “a song about the end of all things, and other happy thoughts,” Mynes impresses with a sound that evolves seamlessly, while balancing bleak reality with a rewarding payoff.

Lyrics muse on the thinning of everything — from one’s hair to the quality of relationships — while acknowledging the looming presence of the final light. A playful synth-laden reflection approaching the two-minute mark kickstarts a captivating sequence, bolstered by a blast of melodic guitars, twinkling synths, and lush wordless vocal adornments. “Thinning” is a hooky, emotive success from Miners and Gardeners.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of March 2023’ Spotify playlist.
