London-based act Sky Is Alright’s “Summer In Galt” is an excellent alt-rock single with shoegaze textures, warming guitars, and a reflective songwriting approach. The first single from FINITE., the project’s first album in five years, draws from a summer marked by a death in the family, with its story of memory and grief serving as an early glimpse into the album’s larger exploration of loss.
Rousing pulses of electric guitar open the track amidst thumping percussion, capturing a heartfelt alt-rock nostalgia. Lushly absorbing lead lines emerge with steady tonal allure, matching the nostalgic rock sound with retrospective, personal lyricism. “In the summer of ’91 my grandma had a stroke / I was told, to go to the family farm in Galt to help take care of her there.” Triumphant guitar twanging emerges around the midpoint, as the stirring performance continues to capture “the summer in Galt I can’t forget.”
Traversing twenty years later, to the “summer of ’21,” finds the weight of loss continuing to linger, here echoed in seeing a portrait in an art museum that resembled “a frame on grandma’s wall.” The responsive “she’s here!” call also invigorates in leading to the final, affecting refrain of “the summer in Galt I can’t forget.” Fusing alternative and shoegaze with consuming lyricism capturing both personal growth and the ongoing struggle with loss, “Summer In Galt” is a phenomenal rock success from Sky Is Alright.
