Porcupine – “Comatose”

/

“Comatose” is a rousing alt-rocker from Porcupine, a band presently based in Minneapolis. They originally formed in 2006, in Wisconsin, and have went on to release two full-lengths, two EPs, and a variety of singles — in addition to opening for acts like The Flaming Lips, Built to Spill, and Mission of Burma. Forthcoming, Porcupine have an upcoming slot at Milwaukee’s Summerfest, supporting Dinosaur Jr.

The track kickstarts with heavy guitar pulses, reflectively accompanied by the steady rhythm section as fervent vocals emerge. The fragmented intensity of the vocals and guitar combine for a sound fondly reminiscent of Queens of the Stone Age. A more hypnotic, psychedelic chorus enamors with the hazy vocals and twangy guitar additions. “Lead the way,” the vocals let out here, concluding with a title-touting shout-out. A snarling guitar lead approaching the two-minute turn plays with added vigor, cementing the effort’s hard-rocking, addictive appeal.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of April 2023’ Spotify playlist.
