Naomi Pacifique, Filmsaaz, + Phüs – “it was”

//

“it was” is a stirring collaboration from a trio of filmmaker-musicians, comprising Naomi Pacifique, Filmsaaz, and Phüs. The single — written in Paris over one afternoon — will be a part of Naomi Pacifique’s upcoming debut album, out this July.

The track begins with an eerie synth layering, courtesy of Filmsaaz, as Phüs’ solemn acoustic guitars enter with an elegant precision. Pacifique’s lushly compelling vocal delivery fits perfectly within this mysterious soundscape. The acoustics range from the steady background pulse to sporadic trickling, furthering the sense of momentum.

The hazy synth eeriness continues into the “was it a dream?” vocal sequence. The atmospheric presentation resembles that of a murky dream state, so the lyrical imagery here is apt. Hypnotic and immersive throughout, “it was” blends understated vocals with a striking soundscape constructed by acoustic guitars and lonesome-sounding synths.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of June 2023’ Spotify playlist.

We discovered this release via MusoSoup, as part of the artist’s promotional campaign.
