Connor Kelly & The Time Warp – “Roy G. Biv”

/

Fusing ’90s grunge nostalgia with a modern rock pull, “Roy G. Biv” is the latest single from Knoxville-based band Connor Kelly & The Time Warp. The track follows up the band’s 2022 album Distant Forest.

Its title referencing the colors within a rainbow, “Roy G. Biv” thematically captures the shifting personalities one may switch between, depending on who and what they’re surrounded by. Per the band, the track’s lyrics “paint a snarky yet authentic image of how it feels attempting to hide your true colors and the struggles that lie within lying to yourself.”

The Tennessee natives conjure a fierce rock sound with “Roy G. Biv,” propelled by fuzzy guitar distortion and reflective bass lines; the sound successfully achieves a “picture of grunge revival with an optimistic lens.” Peppy guitars drive into a bass-fronted vocal soaring, exuding a suave composure into the ensuing distortion. The “speak to each other,” vocal reverberations stir, as does the thunderous guitar additions past the three-minute turn, resulting in a psych-inclined conclusion. “Roy G. Biv” is a gripping showing from Connor Kelly & The Time Warp.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of July 2023’ Spotify playlist.
