The Third Man – “What She Wrote”

/

Meeting two decades ago at Edinburgh College of Art, the band The Third Man have been crafting powerful music ever since — gravitating toward expanding structures with epic, anthemic culminations and cinematic-feeling rousing.

Their powerful new track “What She Wrote” releases ahead of the forthcoming album, Somewhere to Leave, which pursues a theme that has already fascinated the act: “the power of leaving, whether it is a place, a relationship or even a party.” The album is described as “a collection of vignettes about this.”

“What She Wrote” is described by The Third Man as “a song about a relationship at breaking point woven through with the letter she writes to her lover as a spoken performance.” Ruminating acoustics, gentle strings, and lush piano craft a spellbinding introduction alongside whispered vocals.

The solemn lead emerges thereafter, with reflective engrossment: “she looks back on what she wrote.” Clanging guitars and escalating piano at the one-minute turn falls back gracefully, with the track absorbing with a gentle yet steady and emotional pace. “What She Wrote” is a gorgeous offering from The Third Man.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of July 2023’ Spotify playlist.

We discovered this release via MusoSoup, as part of the artist’s promotional campaign.
