Veinmelter is the project of multi-instrumentalist Winston Harrison. “We Go In” takes on added emotional weight in this newly recorded live acoustic performance, revisiting a song inspired by the anticipation and eventual grief of losing a beloved pet, and also a poem titled “Within” by Margaret Atwood.
“I explored the idea of death by imagining the death of my dog,” he explains. “I knew that he would likely die before me and was a good practice of preparing for the grief of loss.”
“What I did not know is that it would happen shortly after I released the first version of this song. I wanted to record it again with a few changes to the way I performed it as it took on a whole new meaning after the death of my dog. Animals have such a profound impact on us emotionally. What a gift to experience this process with him. It was extremely painful, but also very beautiful.”
Solemn, beautiful acoustic guitars lead into Harrison’s haunting vocal presence, escalating into an impassioned “you can take me with you, when you go” refrain. His vocals move from a subdued introspection to a heightened pitch here, sending chills with stirring emotionality. A ghostly vocal resonance also delights in the approach to the four-minute mark. This is a stunning live performance of “We Go In” that will prompt many listeners to explore the fuller version and other excellent songwriting from Veinmelter.
