Def Rain – “This is The Sound”

//

“This is The Sound” is amongst a series of recent new singles from Def Rain. Formed in Denton, Texas, the project is fronted by songwriter Ashley Cromeens, whose ability to weave spellbinding hooks within moody soundscapes is again apparent with “This is The Sound.” The ghostly title-bearing refrain sends chills amidst the nocturnal synth tones and spaghetti-western guitar hints. The contemplative final minute proves striking in its soundscape, while the first half dazzles with an infectious push.

The project’s self-titled album drew praise upon its release in 2012, particularly from the likes of Wayne Coyne, which led to some opening show slots for The Flaming Lips. It was an apt connection, as Def Rain embrace a similarly fantastic ethos for live performances, moving beyond the norm with intricate performances and laser shows. Alongside the duo of Cromeens and CJ Grant Ring, Matt Leer joined the group in 2019, and their second album, Exit, followed in 2020.

Their most recent single is “Feel”:

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of August 2023’ Spotify playlist.
