Matt Warren – “Flight at the End”

/

An emotive alt-rock sound compels on “Flight at the End,” a new track from Nantwich, UK-based artist Matt Warren. The first single from Warren’s upcoming concept album Excited to Die, “Flight at the End” stirs with its range of moody guitar progressions and playful synth-touched brightness. Initially morose lyrics — “the weather’s turned to ash,” — build into a resonating title-bearing chorus, lamenting that “we’re falling to the ground,” akin to a rapidly descending plane.

“This particular song is about conspiracy theories and how they ultimately lead to our demise,” Warren explains. References to doomsday-like imagery and rapid deterioration appear reflective of rampant pessimism in such conspiracy circles, and it’s conveyed with wit and effectiveness here. Also engaging is the spacious bridge past the two-minute mark — “you can’t escape…” — which touts a dark post-punk demeanor prior to another hooky rock emergence. “Flight at the End” is an insightful, melodic offering from Matt Warren.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of August 2023’ Spotify playlist.
