Jenn Vix – “In The Air Tonight”

/

A cover of the Phil Collins classic, “In The Air Tonight” finds multi-instrumentalist Jenn Vix capturing the track’s one-of-a-kind soaring soundscape with effective atmospheric immersion. Legendary guitarist Vernon Reid (Living Color) and bassist Kweenbass add their talents to the track, which is accompanied by a music video, above. The nocturnal beachside setting proves apt, cementing the ’80s nostalgia amidst Vix’s steady vocals, Reid’s expressive guitar lines, and the hypnotic rhythmic underlying.

The lingering guitar tones during the “I can feel it,” vocal sequence play with sporadic enticement. Meanwhile, the lush synth pad backing furthers the strong atmospheric grip. The multi-vocal intensity around 02:45 stirs in particular, as does the guitar-fronted infusions about a minute later. “In The Air Tonight” is a tasteful, invigorating take on this Phil Collins staple from Jenn Vix, who was featured last year with the single “Mr. Strange.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of September 2023’ Spotify playlist.
