Josey Wails – “Sweet Darlin'”

/

A throwback-friendly rocker exploring unrequited love, obsession, and the frustration of infatuation, “Sweet Darlin'” is a stirring success from Baltimore-based artist Josey Wails. Coming via his newly released EP, Sweetheart Darling, the production consumes in its alternations between title-touting ardency and introspective laments — the latter apparent in the initial “filled with desire” admissions amidst a retro-friendly array of thumping bass and snappy guitars.

“Oh my god, sweet darlin’,” the artist sings with a resonant uptick in emotion as the chorus hits. “Ya know you really scare the wits out of me.” The jangly, vibrant guitars and hastened rhythms excite alongside this more enthused vocal outpouring, palpable in its emotion and replay-inducing hookiness. “Sweet Darlin'” is a standout, moving track from Josey Wails.

“It’s one I recorded at home with old RadioShack microphones and a busted Tascam 8 track,” he says of the track. “It’s a nostalgic yet gritty cautionary tale about unrequited love, obsession and the frustrating aspects of infatuation. I’m trying to capture that terrified optimism that accompanies throwing yourself down the proverbial hill.”
