Subway Rat + Danny L’Amour – “Sunglasses”

/

An infectious collaborative single from NY-based artists (and roommates) Subway Rat and Danny L’Amour, “Sunglasses” grips with its meshing ’00s indie-rock nostalgia and escalating pop whimsy. A dynamic vocal showing, between Subway Rat’s unbridled passion and L’Amour’s sweetly mleodic soaring, adds further to the climactic hold throughout. Subway Rat – the project of David Polanco – recently impressed with the album Captain of the Football Team, and this single with Danny L’Amour continues a quick ascent.

Stutter-y guitars and synth flourishes quickly excel into Polanco’s contagious vocal tone, reminiscent of Future Islands. Danny L’Amour’s smoother vocal inflection attains a higher-reaching pop grandiosity, matched by a great guitar-forward intensity compared to Subway Rat’s more synth-touched ferocity. “Sunglasses” is a firm success from this talented duo.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
