Raven & the Dove – “Power Poles”

/

A spacious rock appeal, fit for an open-road yearning, lingers on new single “Power Poles.” The production is a memorable showing from Australian duo Raven & the Dove, comprising Cindy Lee and David Swift. “Power Poles” marks the first single from their upcoming album, out later this year.

“‘Power Poles’ deals with the age-old push and pull of external forces – like responsibilities to make a living – tearing you apart from those you love,” Swift says. Lee adds: “I’ve travelled a lot on my own and this song draws on memories of the freedom of being alone and anonymous on the road, tinged with longing for home.”

The latter yearning for home is especially evident at mid-point — “sunrise, red as my eyes,” Lee’s sweltering vocals let out, as a spoken-word intermittence furthers a narrative with an endless-feeling road ahead. The guitar work in this second half dazzles with grippingly melodic fervency as soulful vocal layers converge. “Go back,” the vocals repeat, concluding with a bluesy satisfaction. “Power Poles” is a strong showing from Raven & the Dove.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
