Kate Pending – ‘Pigmented Reality’

Intoxicating with an atmospheric electronic sound fit for futuristic escapism, Pigmented Reality is the new album from Berlin-based artist Kate Pending. Deep house, electro-pop, techno, and beyond are integrated with stylish cohesion, maintaining a consistent precision in its soundscapes and structural momentum. The scene-setting “Lost Ways” builds serenely into “Soma Sequence,” a gorgeous synth-pop dazzler with spoken-word vocal haunts and glistening leads; Pigmented Reality kicks off in quality form, and doesn’t let up from there.

The album’s title track is especially inviting, soothing with a swell of thumping percussion and hazy synths fit for meditative introspection. Following, the late-night intrigue of “Retro Island” embraces a drum-and-bass appeal in its thumping rhythms and beckoning vocal refrain, melding beautifully with lushly immersive keys. More bustling rhythmic additions make for a danceable entrancement in the track’s second half; it stands as one of many highlights on Pigmented Reality, another thorough success from Kate Pending, who first caught our ears earlier this year with album cut “Onyx Skies.”

“Soma Sequence” can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Electronic’ Spotify playlist.
