Bridging introspective emotion and a rock-forward hookiness, “Birth” is the recent single from Blue Coffee. The French band formed after the loss of a mutual musician friend in late 2017. Singer and guitarist Gautier Rodriguez, drummer Nico de Bank, and bassist Sebastien Tourel formed the project. They were later joined by co-singer Aurelie Cestari (who left after a few months) and guitarist Francois Debiol.

They describe “Birth” as “about the moment when this new reality occurs. The one when the future becomes the inevitable present.” Understated guitar glistening complements vocals that remark being “part of it,” with that involvement escalating amidst impassioned guitar lines and rising vocal momentum. An especially captivating sequence occurs at mid-point, when the elongated vocals and clamoring guitar distortion exudes shades of Radiohead. The second half dazzles in its dynamic approach, from the ferocious rock-friendly invigoration to the dreamy guitar tones to close it out. “Birth” is a wholly memorable single from Blue Coffee.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
