Chè Aimee Dorval – “Joyride”

/

“Joyride” is a magnetic single from Vancouver-based artist Chè Aimee Dorval, who seamlessly builds from dreamy pop introspection into an anthemic “I won’t fall for the joyride,” ardency. Trip-hop, art-pop, and electronic elements enjoyably intertwine, resulting in an atmospheric delight that’s further bolstered by a visually savvy music video — featuring dancer Joi Of Dance and videographer Kevin B. Smith.

“‘Joyride’ is about reclaiming your power, embracing who you are, and honouring your needs without compromise,” Chè explains. Referring to Joi’s breathtaking dancing, Chè continues: “When it came time to plan the ‘Joyride’ video, it was clear that her performance was meant to bring the song’s story to life.” The video’s red hues and desert setting provide a contemplative backdrop to Joi’s movements — beautifully flexible and capricious, like an artful contrast to the “straight line,” lyrical references throughout; it’s a lovely contrast between the free-flowing emanations after breaking free from a toxic relationship, and the controlled path of a “straight line,” within a controlled relationship.

Captivating vocals emit an impassioned appeal throughout, depicting the emotional end of a toxic relationship, and with a strong emphasis on reclaiming independence and refusing to be manipulated or pulled back into past pain. “If we stay this way you know we’ll fall apart,” the vocals admit at one point, confident in the relationship’s unraveling nature. A catharsis arrives thereafter: “You watched me break for the last time / Now you will never find me.” Both in its audible and visual forms, “Joyride” is a fulfilling success from Chè Aimee Dorval.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
