A rousing rock success that depicts perseverance in a world full of tumult, “Cruel World” comes via May the Muse, the project of American/German singer-songwriter Désirée Mishoe. “The lyric is about a resilient connection that emerges despite the surrounding hardships and injustices,” she explains. “A sanctuary of warmth and understanding in an environment marred by suffering and indifference.”
She continues: “When we recorded ‘Cruel World,’ I was listening to the Sisters of Mercy, particularly the album Floodland. I love the persistent bass lines that refuse to evolve; it forces the band into dynamic choices to elevate the reprises and doesn’t rely on cheap key changes etc. This is my version of goth.”
A heavy bass pulse arrives into twanging guitar delights and a subtle arp-y synth undercurrent. “It’s a cruel world,” the vocals call out, musing on an intense future as crisper guitar tones emerge amidst a backing warming distortion. A string-laden impact hits hard as the vocals soar, into a “don’t let go,” beckoning as the synths arp re-emerge. “Cruel World” is an impactful, replay-inducing success from May The Muse.
