Pamela Hopkins – “Me Being Me”

/

An empowering success, “Me Being Me” is a new track from Little Rock-based artist Pamela Hopkins — whose fusing of country, Americana, and rock compels alongside embraces of one’s perceived faults. The criticisms of others are molded into a source of personal power, rather than a source of insecurity. “You say I act a fool, the things I do embarrass you,” Hopkins sings amidst a twangy guitar drive. “If I disappoint you, I’m sorry.” The initially apologetic introspection rouses into a more confident vigor: “That’s just me being me,” her vocals add, admitting being “no saint,” and liking to “drink and stay out late.”

The track comes via Hopkins’ acclaimed album Lord Knows I Ain’t No Saint, nominated by both the Arkansas Country Music Awards and International Singer Songwriters Association. Hopkins’ riveting vocal performance bolsters gripping songwriting from Vickie McGehee, D. Vincent Williams, and Jim Femino, the latter of whom played a strong mentorship role for Hopkins before his passing. “Jim was in the hospital the day we were supposed to meet in Nashville,” Hopkins says. “I offered to bring him anything he needed, and we ended up just visiting and talking music. He played me some songs on his laptop from his hospital bed, and ‘Me Being Me’ was one of them. It instantly felt like my story.”

“This one always hit home for me, and the title of my latest album actually comes from a line in this song,” she continues. “Jim passed away a few years ago, and I never got to co-write with him like we planned. But I’m honored to carry a piece of him in this release.”
