Sucker Crush – “Stranger” + “Holding Still”

//

Oakland-based band Sucker Crush craft a dreamy, spellbinding melding of rock and folk on their new EP, Echoqualia. Intertwining calming vocal captivation and lush orchestral flourishes alongside trickling guitars, the project — led by the gripping songwriting of Marissa Deitz — excels with a thoroughly immersive sound. Amongst the EP’s highlights are the tracks “Stranger” and “Holding Still.” The former opens the EP, stunning with its serene vocal heartrending as acoustic guitars evolve into gorgeous strings.

Described as “the soul of the EP,” “Holding Still” laments on the “world dissolving around me,” as a minimalist acoustic-folk arsenal begins. Shades of Elliott Smith show in the understated instrumentation backing, while the vocals maintain an introspective allure. Excelling across both orchestral-tinged beauty and sparser folk gorgeousness, Sucker Crush enthrall on this EP.
