Tomasz Kowalczyk – ‘Elysium’

A heartrending new album from Polish musician Tomasz Kowalczyk, Elysium consumes with a piano-driven classical sound — spanning tonally from the elegant intrigue of “Your Story” to the ardent dynamics within “New Beginning.” Kowalczyk’s past material stands out for its eclectic range — including an electronic album with guitarist Seif Limami, AMBASADORIA. Kowalczyk’s most recent release, Elysium successfully intertwines his tendency for momentum-filled songcraft with a piano-minded focus.

Opening track “New Beginning” wastes no time in showcasing a variety of soundscapes — traversing from initial wintry piano minimalism into a rousing mid-point of clanging emotion and foreboding grandiosity; the structural unveiling feels enjoyably cinematic in its scope. “The Romanticism of Psychedelic Customs” ensues and carries a similar impact, particularly after a two-minute turn where layers of piano intermingle like falling raindrops. Elsewhere, “In Memoriam” weaves rapid single-note progressions with mystique-filled chordal pulses. Capped off by the gorgeous, romantic-setting vibe of “Caprice,” Elysium is a moving success of an album from Tomasz Kowalczyk.
