Conjuring a memorable psychedelic folk introspection, “What Are You Gonna Do?” is a consuming track from Chicago-based singer-songwriter Frank Sintich. First catching our ears with the moodily enveloping track “Hasn’t Stopped Raining Yet,” Sintich succeeds here as well with “What Are You Gonna Do?” — which stylistically recalls the serenely melodic charms of George Harrison.
Hypnotic layers of clanging guitars traverse into Sintich’s warming vocal tone, asking “what are you gonna do when there’s no tomorrow?” The following lyrics play like a reckoning for a soul that lacks awareness, and is not fully understanding of their impacts on others. “Who are you gonna blame, anyone but you,” Sintich sings, capturing the importance of accepting responsibility and handling the ensuing challenges that arrive from that acceptance.
A steady, glowing psych-folk instrumentation radiates throughout, while Sintich’s vocals range from those aforementioned questions — sung with a dazed yet affecting quality — to wordless, mantra-like harmonizing past the track’s mid-point. “What Are You Gonna Do?” is a fully resonating success from Sintich, who continues to showcase his impressive, emotively gripping songwriting.
“What Are You Gonna Do tackles a lack of self awareness and its impact on those around people lacking it,” Sintich says. “It explores where individuals have caused harm to others along with the loss they experience in their relationships. Ultimately, the song is about understanding one’s actions, accepting responsibility, and navigating the emotional challenges that follow this discovery.”
