True North – “No Exit Wound”

/

The enthralling debut single from True North, “No Exit Wound” exudes a soulful rock mystique fitting for rainy-day introspection. True North is led by songwriter and musician Tones Thorburn, also known for his previous projects Stormporter and Late Model European. “No Exit Wound” maneuvers seamlessly across an array of debonair organs, jazzy keys, and riveting vocal performances; Thorburn’s suave tone takes the lead, while Sandy Mill’s backing vocals bolster the sound further with soulful ardency.

Joining Thorburn, who plays guitar in addition to his singing, are a cast of talented musicians: Matthias Jordan on piano, electric piano, and organ; Milan Borich on drums; Ben King on bass and backing vocals; Sandy Mill on vocals; and Edith and Clementine Bainbridge-King on percussion.

Vocal depictions of being “shot by your love” and how “it burns inside of me” exude a palpable adoration. “I won’t let you go,” Thorburn sings into an organ-laden glistening, culminating in the smooth dual-vocal swaps — “your love…” — as the keys and hypnotic rhythm section converge with cohesive entrancement. “I got a feeling that I can’t let go,” Thorburn continues, pairing these depictions of being struck by love’s bite with a continuously enveloping production, full of mood and mystery.
