A powerful track from Ben Aubergine that dazzles in its range of moody piano, soaring guitar work, and passionate vocals, “Spoke For What I Knew” marks a resonating success from the Illinois-based artist. Aubergine wrote the track in 1998, completing it decades later. The themes convey an evergreen emotional relatability — exploring the delicate space between two people when their emotions are not aligned. “It’s a song about relational asymmetry, and how sometimes separation is the only way out,” says Aubergine, who returned to music after decades away, working as an ER doctor.
A mixture of jangling guitars and bouncy piano make for a vibrant introduction, shifting into a moodier immersion as Aubergine’s introspective vocals arise. “I watched you for some time,” he lets out, referencing a moment that “cracked and disappeared” alongside ensuing “burning tears” as the couple attains a newfound sense of loneliness. Impassioned, wordless vocals emerge thereafter, as does the catching piano and guitar interplay.
“We sank into a tethered blue, and then I spoke for what I know,” his vocals achieve a poetic prowess, artfully capturing a relationship’s crossroads — where emotional mis-alignments appears. Magnetic, charismatic guitar work flows here as the “one fragile thread” becomes ripped in two, culminating in a final dose of expressive vocals and lingering guitars — concluding the excellent “Spoke For What I Knew” with strong enthrallment.
