Dream-pop and trip-hop atmospherics meld enjoyably on “Currency,” a recent track from Deep Heaven. The project formed last year in Boise, Idaho, comprising Joseph Hoisington (vocals, guitar) and Maxwell Modeen (synths, drum machines). Jangling guitars, spacey synths, and memorable vocal swells feature throughout the memorable production, sounding like a cross between Junior Boys and LCD Soundsystem in its more electronic-minded moments.
The vocal layers throughout are also captivating, especially throughout a second half where “why can’t you see it my way?” ardent pleas infuse within a dreamier backing vocal reflection. Serene synth pulses ensue into a satiating finale to the track, which excels in its “holding on, and I’m caving in” emotive vocal passions and artful guitar/synth interplay. The track marks a definitive success from Deep Heaven, who are also noted for their live performances.
