Swiss-based creative director and producer Giorgio Fazio dives into questions of existence and perception on his conceptual EP, Nothing but Simulation. Inspired by centuries of philosophical inquiry and the modern simulation hypothesis, the EP’s two tracks tout a generative digital environment, where sound and imagery loop inside one another with mirror-like reflections. As Fazio explains, “I wanted to create a work that revolves entirely around the concept of simulation… an artistic experience that makes people think about what it means to exist in a simulated life.”
The EP’s title track unfolds with atmospheric intrigue, weaving a buzzing bass element, clanking percussion, and a repeating vocal sample — cut-up artfully in a way that reminds fondly of Oneohtrix Point Never. Pulsing rhythmic elements move with climactic ardency as the two-minute turn approaches, culminating in a shimmering captivation in the final segment; the vocals here unveil a infectious, more constant presence, and into an elongated lushness that caps off “Nothing but Simulation” with sating impact.
“But Something Feels Real” also excels in its inventive production, infusing similarly wordless vocal elements to start, though here alongside a more sporadic, built-up instrumentation. A lusher soundscape emanates from the keys and hazy vocal effects, while the ensuing percussive pit-pattering injects with brisker allure as warming textures enter the fold underneath. Both tracks on the EP thoroughly succeed with atmospheric, inventive prowess.
