Lush alt-pop and shoegaze-friendly textures converge beautifully on “Five O’Clock,” the debut single from San Francisco-based duo olive green. The new project comprises Matthew Farrell (of previously featured band Night Hikes) and Amaris Griggs, whose dreamily inviting vocal presence melds seamlessly with layered, fuzzy guitars and nostalgic rhythms, which invoke a ’90s click-clacking warmness.
Murmuring guitars complement the trip-hop rhythmic feelings as Griggs’ serene vocals enter. “The leaves never fall here, but the sunset’s start to bite your nose,” the scene-setting lyricism compels into further reflective layers, swelling into warming guitar distortion as the vocals uptick a bit in emotion. Glimmering synths during the “we could be friends” vocal segment bolster the enveloping soundscape further, into a sating finale that drifts away into the glowing autumnal haze.
