Melding minimalist classical elements and experimentation through its inventive use of strings, voice, and overall stirring instrumentation, I try to breath in a Vortex is the enveloping new album from David Kovacs. The Hungary-based experimental musician, performer, and contemporary composer balances introspective dreamscapes with the unsettling weight of reality, exploring the tension between imagination and external pressures.
Commencing the album, “I try” unveils a cinematic mystique in its soundscape — pairing weeping strings with outdoor ambience, in a swamp-like setting. The foreboding orchestration and river-inhabitant noises combine with looming, ominous allure. Ensuing track “The empty waiting” is another gem, resembling a nocturnal night drive in its creaking elements — presenting a vehicular-like intrigue with the machinated-like allure, contrasted with lush bird-chirping and burgeoning string elements that appear with balanced artfulness.
Another standout track, “Voices lost in the Vortex” is a gorgeously haunting production — weaving slowed-down string ghostliness, as the other tracks do, though within a vocal-laden chilliness with specter-like translucence. The orchestral elements conjure an oddly beautiful introspection, while the sporadic vocal elements play with a horror-film sensation. Album finale “The healing practice” is more a showcase in caressing immediacy, also infusing voice, though here with a soaring, triumphant ardor. I try to breath in a Vortex is a riveting, atmospheric listening experience from David Kovacs.
