Portland, OR-based artist juracán crafts an immersive electronic world on pierretronic, their first synth-driven release. The 12-track journey is shaped by IDM, downtempo, and ambient influences — in addition to a love for both film and video game soundtracks. The project is led by Pierre Carbuccia Abbott, originally from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The self-taught singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist dazzles with a plethora of consuming soundscapes across pierretronic.
“brisa” opens the album with a spacey, inviting dreaminess — pairing hazy synth tones and gentle rhythms with lushly absorbing allure. An ethereal, haunting emergence past the one-minute turn exudes a more delicate precision, with a weightless synth pad-forward charm emanating into the ensuing track “corriente.” There, warm bass pulses and heightened, starry-eyed synths combine with steady rhythmic throbs for another scenic, introspective success.
Another standout track, “burbujas” is more immediate in its textural reveal. A playful bass bounce and effervescent synth layers converge with seamless entrancement, shifting between gauzy serenity and plucky glimmering; the added sonar-like effect at mid-point is especially engrossing. “arrecife” also enamors with its atmospheric pull; a grimy, elongated backing tone contrasts enjoyably with a colorful, enamoring synth radiance. Elsewhere, album finale “fluir” builds with a Ryuichi Sakamoto-esque captivation, cinematic-feeling with its range of both illuminated synth tones and whirring ambient effects. pierretronic is an atmospherically blissful success from juracán.
