Chris Canipe – “Barely Stitched”

Kansas City-based singer-songwriter Chris Canipe delivers a satiating rock sound on new single “Barely Stitched,” the opener to his excellent new album Monuments. Canipe describes the track, which succeeds in its melodic introspection, as “a song about America as it is.” He continues: “Superduty trucks and Punisher stickers. Spam phone calls and wildfires. Billionaires buying social media companies. Different definitions of wrong and right. It’s a jam.”

A warming array of twangy guitars, sturdy bass, and slight organs kicks the track into enjoyable gear. “They’re tearing down the banners, pushing trash into the aisles,” his vocals let out, conjuring a sense of present-day bleakness in furthering: “If you’re waiting on a winner, it’s gonna be awhile.” Further depictions of crowded parking lots and how “big wheels keep on turning, like nothing has gone wrong” shows continued motion in spite of tumult, in a country filled with divide: “Fifty stars all hang together, worn and barely stitched.” That line especially, and the track overall, serves up a poignant and affecting look at modern times, within a strongly melodic rock production.
