Stockholm-based artist Midsummer Ex crafts a memorable blend of nostalgic synthwave and poignant storytelling on “Television.” Lush synths, twinkling guitars, and effervescent pads provide a caressing backdrop for emotive vocals, exploring the quiet drift of relationships over time. Infused with intriguing vocal samples, the track balances introspective melancholy with irresistibly replay-friendly central hook, evoking shades of New Order, Pet Shop Boys, and Robyn. Written and produced by Midsummer Ex, and mastered by Luis M Deltell, “Television” is a shimmering, impactful journey through distance, routine, and emotional evolution.
A flourishing, warming array of synths combines with a radio-dial spin of samples — immediately invoking a nostalgic, caressing quality that continues into the vocal emergence, lushly melodic as pulsing synth-bass and effervescent pads intertwine. “It’s my main ambition,” they let out as the rhythms perk up, gearing up into the “we must go our separate ways” hook, where a melding of magnetic guitars and synths conjure a lovely sound reminiscent of New Order. A title-bearing exclamation and ensuing count-up builds into a reprisal of that replay-inducing chorus, twinkling with enamoring vocals, whirring guitars, and a hazily-tinted electronic backdrop. Playful synths and a Japanese vocal sample then traverse into a wholly sating conclusion, with a final hook and saxophone-laden drop capping it off with alluring ardor.
