Toronto-based composer Eddy Ruyter and City of Dawn collaborate on the serene EP Silfira, a title translating to “silent fire.” Pairing patient piano lines with ambient guitar textures, the release offers a quiet glow of restraint. It is a moving, atmospheric journey crafted for deep reflection and evening unwinding.
Opening the EP, “Flora in Mind Unfurls” is an expressive gem, reflective of the artist’s ability to traverse both delicate and grandiose soundscapes. An initial ethereality emanates from lushly prancing piano and slight guitar chimes, escalating with wintry allure into a ravishing final minute, where a bursting string-laden presence mingles cohesively with the magnetic piano work. “Labyrinth of Air” arrives next, melding an airy textural backing with twinkling piano clanging, and into a caressing guitar twanging that lingers beautifully throughout an increasing sense of effervescence, complete with bright piano touches and backing swells.
“Sun-Kissed Sea” then stirs with a more understated gracefulness, devoid of rhythms as gentle piano and light guitar twangs interact serenely. That lulling, peaceful quality continues into the EP’s riveting title track, where a starry-eyed synth pad combines with hypnotic piano for a blissful, memorable sound. EP finale “Time Unfolding” is the most spacious and calming of them all, sending off the release on a truly ambient tone. Silfira is a moving, impactful mesmerizer of an EP from City of Dawn & Eddy Ruyter.
