Lateral Root – “Sunlight”

/

An atmospheric electronic gem, “Sunlight” conveys a smoothly absorbing array of spacey synth tones, hypnotic rhythms, and intriguing textures — representing a thorough success from Lateral Root, the Bristol, England-based project of Tom Quick. His production utilizes analogue synths, computer software, and outboard hardware, fusing a unique recording process with an approachably futuristic-like soundscape. The result is cinematic in its momentum, while retaining a melodically magnetic quality throughout.

A submerged prancing of brisk synths swells as the track gets underway, conjuring a climactic charm furthered by a lush vocal emergence and a spacey arpeggio infusion. The sporadic use of voice adds a spine-tingling allure as the understated synths assemble for an otherworldly intrigue, blooping with hypnotically caressing qualities. Glistening textures, a radiant synth lead, and rhythmic click-clacking meld for an especially memorable sequence approaching the two-minute turn, and into an invitingly spacious serenity thereafter. Shades of Boards of Canada are fondly apparent in the chilly synth tones.

The track’s second half continues to captivate with its immersive atmospheric prowess, artfully navigating across intoxicating rhythmic steadiness, spacey synth lines, and occasional washes of that dreamy vocal effect. A final soulful vocal charisma appears and then vanishes as the track comes to a satiating close, turned down into one lulling arpeggio that comfortably fades out. “Sunlight” is a resonating success from Lateral Root.
