Motala, Sweden-based producer Medberg continues his ascent with “Mirrorfield,” a vibrant follow-up to his acclaimed debut single, “1992.” Drawing deep inspiration from ’90s IDM legends like Aphex Twin while incorporating the glossy futurism of A.G. Cook and Disclosure, the track is a masterclass in colorful, glitch-touched electronica. The production effectively bridges the gap between nostalgic broken rhythms and contemporary, high-energy pop textures.
Thumping, playful rhythms and a vibrantly stutter-y electronic flourishing intertwine as the track gets underway, colorful and melodic from the get-go. A pulsing, warming synth adornment lingers beautifully in the background — complemented further by a trickling, arp-y immersion that interacts aptly with the more energized rhythmic presence at this point. Moments of lusher intrigue arrive seamlessly, both just prior to the one-minute mark and again at the two-minute turn — excelling with a starry-eyed synth entrancement and subdued, sporadic bass backing.
The production within “Mirrorfield” dazzles with its continuous sense of motion; even in its lushest moments the track stirs with atmospheric depth, via the twinkling electronic layers and thumping rhythmic bolstering, while its more infectious and vibrant entries are immediate and delectably bright. “Mirrorfield” is a standout showing from Medberg, who artfully pairs ’90s IDM influences with a modern, energetic atmospheric pull.
