A stellar debut single from Little Rock, AR-based band Raney, “Healing” captures a warming, atmospheric rock emotion that reminds fondly of The War On Drugs. Jangling guitar tones, soft acoustic strums, and dreamy synths meld beautifully amidst enveloping vocal introspections. Thematically, the track captures the complicated emotions of grief, especially emphasizing unspoken words and lingering questions; lead singer Cliff wrote the track following the loss of his father.
The production consumes across both heightened moments of ardor — particularly the “I’m moving on” declaration in the closing moments — and dreamier contemplation. “The man we barely knew, that door is closing,” Cliff’s vocals delight in an example of the latter, moving amidst tender guitar twangs and into an impactful “back to you” punctuation. The ensuing refrain “I just keep feeling a little healing” acknowledges a push to keep moving onward, even as melancholy and words left unsaid linger. This is an excellent piece of songwriting from Raney, formed in 2023 by longtime friends.
