Stalacs is a dark ambient experimental EP from Utrecht-based composer Arpatle, the moniker of Patrick Bossink. Utilizing granular delays, 1024 sine tones, and acoustic feedback rather than traditional synthesizers, the four-track project crafts a gripping lo-fi sonic landscape propelled by inventive sounds and rhythmic pulses.
A stirring opener, “Mare Serenitatis” exemplifies the project’s dynamic range, achieving both lush beauty and unsettling darkness. Ruminating, grumbling darkness persists as the production gets underway with a delectable murkiness. Gradual, subtle shimmers of effervescence ease in, assuming a more glimmering prominence past the two-minute turn. Samples resembling bird-chirping inject in the second half; these various elements coalesce for a sound that envelops in both brighter and nocturnal tonal aspects. The ensuing “Aurora Stalactis” presents with a more rhythmic pulsing initially, its head-nodding immersion swelling into ghostly moments, where a dark choral-like resonance melds with pulsing bass and eerie atmospherics.
Another standout success, “Cavenon” also embraces a vocal element, here right away with a bellowing, haunting intrigue. This elongated, spine-tingling presence largely persists throughout all 8+ minutes, and is met by crackling sound effects and solemn ambient textures. EP finale “Ignit” then arrives with a spacious airiness, climactically expanding to foreboding, fuzzy tones and distortion. Each of the four tracks on Stalacs excels with their own personalities and soundscapes, enthralling as a riveting listening experience.
