Jay Saint James – “Lavender”

Exploring the emotional cost of living behind a facade within a grooving pop production, “Lavender” is an excellent single from Jay Saint James. Inspired by golden-age Hollywood secrets and fixer Scotty Bowers, the track merges swaggering disco textures, punchy drums, and effervescent piano lines while exploring secrecy, reinvention, and the ultimate expense of glitzy stardom.

Spirited wordless harmonizing and charismatic piano lines bolster head-nodding rhythms as Saint James’ vibrantly melodic vocals emerge. “I left my past behind and changed my name then I made another mask to use,” his vocals radiate, within a moody yet infectious production savvy with shades of Scissor Sisters. The changing-name depictions play as a nod to the reinvention demanded by the studio system, highlighting how identities in Hollywood become fluid and disposable.

“Lavender, you live a lie for me, I’d die for you,” Saint James’ vocals assume a soaring quality during the stellar chorus. The expressive, magnetic vocal presence combines with pulsating piano tones for an especially replay-inducing sequence, while the title feels like a poignant reference to the historical concept of a “lavender marriage” and its role in shielding public figures from ruin. The laborious process required within a world of glitz and glamor is further conveyed in the line “for diamonds I’ve played every role and every room” — echoing a performance that extends well beyond the stage. Cinematic thematic imagery, regarding truth and self, combine with a grooving pop production for a thoroughly successful output from Jay Saint James.
