M3G – “De-Anchored”

“De-Anchored” is a personally affecting folk single from Chippenham, UK-based singer-songwriter M3G. Utilizing sophisticated doubling techniques inspired by Florence and the Machine, the track deploys maritime metaphors to explore a disorienting loss of identity through layered, dramatic vocal intensity and perpetual acoustic-laden blissfulness.

Tranquil acoustic strums set “De-Anchored” into introspective motion, complemented thereafter by M3G’s expressive vocals. “I am not myself right now. I worry I’ve forgotten how, and it’s so cold,” her fervent delivery lets out, with both the quivering lead and dreamy reflective harmonies contrasting artfully with the laid-back acoustic strums. “Just me in this sinking ship I built. I gave into those stupid thoughts. Now I know I got lost,” she continues tracing a path of personal rediscovery following losing one’s bearings. The references to being “de-anchored” and experiencing the “rhythmic toss of the waves” resonate in their seafaring imagery.

M3G’s pairing of steady, understated acoustic undercurrents and vibrantly emotive vocal layers makes for a delightful mix throughout, sending chills in the cathartic, concluding “eyay yay” ardor. The preceding lines portray a state of being adrift, heading toward a rocky shore and being full aware of that potential demise. Full of emotion and sincerity, “De-Anchored” is a poetic folk success from M3G, succeeding in its ocean/adrift imagery and heart-on-sleeve perspectives of self.
