The Lyricals – “Breakdown”

“Breakdown” is a heavy-rocking alternative anthem from London-based duo The Lyricals, thematically confronting toxic manipulation and false fronts amidst sweltering guitar distortion and fervent vocals. Dino Mensano and Josh Bovington also blend their electronic origins with a 2000s rock backbone, utilizing thick riffs and propulsive synths. The result is a cathartic, aggressive refusal of exploitation, signaling a firm sonic evolution for this ascending act.

Gritty guitar distortion opens the track, sweltering with infectious invigoration as fierce vocals ruminate on “changing times” and how they “call for new measures.” An energetic, panting rhythmic backdrop then moves in, complementing the stream-of-consciousness vocal feeling and heavy-rock guitars. Personal tumult is conveyed, tracing the suffocating nature of chaos. “Something’s telling me that I’m gonna break down,” the vocals admit. “Gotta get away, gotta get out now.”

Accounts of perseverance enthrall in the subsequent section, complemented by a playful synth-laden reflection, momentarily taking over the guitars alongside the steady percussion. The distorted guitars re-emerge cohesively thereafter, as does the “you’re breaking down in front of me!” punk-forward vigor. Fuzzy guitars take hold at the two-minute turn as the vocals take a reprieve, appearing again during a riveting finale with especially expressive percussion and vocal ardor. “Breakdown” is an impassioned, replay-inducing rock success from The Lyricals.
