“Runaway Baby” is a catchy power-pop collaboration from Tom Tikka & the Missing Hubcaps and The Star Prairie Project. Co-written by Tikka and Nolen Chew Jr., the track marries sunny, multi-layered vocal harmonies and spirited guitar lines with a tongue-in-cheek lyrical twist simultaneously lamenting a beloved and a vintage automobile they took off with.
Warming, twangy guitars and steady acoustic strums kick “Runaway Baby” into enjoyable, approachable gear. “I’ve been by my lonesome, since you left without a word,” Tikka’s melodic vocal presence emerges, lending a sense of solitude and introspection amidst the serene guitar-forward instrumentation. The lyricism cleverly shifts from more conventional romantic yearning for another, to a direct plea for what’s also tugging at their heart: a beloved vintage car no longer at arm’s reach.
“My sweetheart took my baby, yeah, she took her for a whirl,” Tikka’s vocals continue to lament. “Now I’m sick to death with worry about what happened to my girls.” A compelling power-pop feeling then arises during the lovely title-touting hook, where Beach Boys-esque vocal harmonies envelop into a twangy guitar solo. The understated “my baby needs an oil change” perspectives enamor within a subdued bridge, shifting thereafter into more delectable vocal harmonies and an overall satisfying send-off. “Runaway Baby” is a fantastic collaboration from Tom Tikka & the Missing Hubcaps and The Star Prairie Project.
