Body – “I’m Still Alive”

“I’m Still Alive” is an excellent new single from Body, the solo project of former Hot Hot Heat founding member Paul Hawley. Released on Audiomanic Records, the track transitions from sparsely atmospheric verses into a fuzzy, climactically guitar-driven culmination, balancing existential reflection with an eventual rock energy that finds meaning within life’s mundane, everyday moments.

A momentum-filled production that expands from understated art-pop intrigue to rousing rock guitars, “I’m Still Alive” compels initially with a title-bearing vocal proclamation — coexisting well with steady percussion and chiming pulses. A dreamier, reverbed vocal tone appears just after the one-minute turn, bolstered by a fuzzy bass presence and heady “in the house there is a room, in the room there is a frame…” stream-of-consciousness vocal feeling.

“I’m still alive,” a warming, melodic vocal reprisal shows around midpoint, where the thick bass buzzing and chiming, trickling effects continue to conjoin with seamless immersion. Blares of electric guitar combine with the hypnotic bass drive for a particularly invigorating final minute, embracing an angular rock enthrallment in its jumpy, concise guitar twangs and final, lushly hypnotic “I’m still alive” vocal reveal. Emitting thematic perseverance and artful structural savvy in its memorable production, “I’m Still Alive” is an excellent output from Body.
