A gorgeously serene, synth-driven sound hypnotizes on “Bitter Bloom,” a newly released track from Alfa Nova. The project formed in 2018 — in Brighton, UK — by Hungarian-born Balint and Filipino-born Nick; they previously caught our ears with the single “Woozle” back in 2020. Their latest success arrives via “Bitter Bloom,” an excellent single they describe as thematically exploring “recognising your own patterns and mistakes while struggling to change them.”
Hazy, distant-sounding synths and steady percussion evolve into a glistening, dreamy upfront electronic charm. “Taking something back,” a lush vocal immersion follows, complemented by mellow doses of synths that expand again into that arpeggiated, blissful momentum. The bass-forward “taking something back, isn’t easy” verses’ introspections build with lovely, climactic intrigue into flourishes of electronic mystique, taking off past the two-minute turn into the combination of harmonious vocal layers and delectable electronics. “Bitter Bloom” is a fantastic return from Alfa Nova.
