Camryn – “Ghost”

Canadian singer-songwriter Camryn balances vulnerability and dynamic alt-rock on her self-recorded single “Ghost.” Drawing inspiration from the textures of shoegaze and alternative, the track pairs textured guitar distortion with moving vocals. Her performance underscores an intimate narrative of relationship imbalances and the personal growth that follows, creating a powerful yet approachable soundscape that is both dreamy and explosive.

Warming guitar distortion, invoking a sort of ’90s alt-rock nostalgia, opens the track with caressing qualities. Panting percussion and glistening guitar additions bolster the rock soundscape enjoyably, followed by Camryn’s soaring vocal presence. “But in my head, just wanted you to keep me on your mind,” she lets out, signaling an entry of rumbling guitar ruminations amidst the jangling charm. A striking vocal shift takes hold thereafter, its aspirational “hope you…” sentiments feeling biting and cathartic alongside continued guitar warmth.

The alternations between the sludgy alt-rock verses and the emotive, moodier title-referencing sequence make for a wholly absorbing listening experience throughout. Camryn’s heavy-rock influences meld wonderfully here with a knack for hooky structural ascents and heartfelt lyricism, which according to Camryn explores “a past relationship where I stayed longer than I should have, exploring the realization of giving far more than I was receiving and the growth that came from that experience.” The result is a thorough success.
