The album opens with “Icey Roads,” a deeply compelling critique of the American promise. It’s a standout showcase in songwriting and production, which we featured in May. The rest of Freeze matches that gem’s high-quality performance and melodic savvy. The ensuing track, “Come Home Tonight,” stirs with a moodier, aspiring introspection—delivering lines like “tomorrow is coming, but it could leave you behind” that convey a sense of anticipation and carpe-diem encouragement within a trip-hop and soul-pop hybrid; the “trying to get home” multi-layered harmony sequence is especially compelling.
Another standout track, “Bunker,” melds retrospective lyrical storytelling—its “wish upon a fairy tale” depiction of a childhood bedroom’s tranquility combining with a mixture of piano-led balladry and soaring melodic expanses. “Turns out all the kings horses and all the kings men, don’t put broken families together again,” a particularly resonant line declares, framing escapism as a source of comfort in childhood tumult.
