Dutch artist Erik Neimeijer immerses on the soulful folk-rock single “Birds Of A Feather.” Originally written twenty years ago, the artist describes the release as “a song that starts in the style of Tom Waits and eventually ends up in the musical melting pot of New Orleans.” Lyrically, Neimeijer delivers a sharp critique aimed at the opinionated people who prefer their own voices to actual discourse, set amidst a dynamic array of guitars and brass.
“Talkin’ bout nothing,” Neimeijer’s smooth vocal presence opens, as solemn guitar twangs and sporadic bass warmth gradually expand to greater fervency, alongside his riveting vocals. “Talkin’ bout weather, birds of a feather, please give them wings,” he lets out with particularly magnetic emotion, suggesting a greater expanse there though arriving back into the intriguing, bluesy folk-rock introspections. A fantastic injection of brass shows thereafter, melding with scorching guitar trickles and wordless vocal enthusiasm.
The interactions between suave guitar stylings and vibrant brass make for a captivating midpoint section, traversing wonderfully to an enthused final minute. The “names of people” vocal passion coexists there with jangling, bouncing guitar distortion and effervescent brass emotion, resembling a fusing of New Orleans-set charisma and rollicking rock foreboding. Touting a strongly climactic song structure and evident musicianship, “Birds Of A Feather” is a fully enveloping standout from Erik Neimeijer.
