East London-based artist Greg Zucker’s solo project Land Mass debuts with Fading, an independently recorded rock EP exploring personal closure. Blending acoustic folk, shoegaze distortion, and atmospheric textures, the release navigates emotional processing through dynamic, self-produced arrangements.
“Green Parakeet” opens with a lushly vulnerable lead delivery. “I don’t wanna be in your way,” Zucker sings amidst soft acoustic strums, weaving a sporadic, subdued intrigue. This initial folk composure swells suddenly yet cohesively into a rousing rock expanse, captivating in its warming distortion and twanging guitar lead. The initial lyrical refrain returns amidst this heavier backing, with Zucker’s singing ascending thereafter in emotion while thematically ruminating on memory and the future alike. Right away, his knack for melodic and tonally dynamic songwriting is on full display.
The rest of the EP continues to compel consistently. The ensuing “Trojan Horses” is more immediate in its embrace of rock fervency, fusing whirring guitars, jangly undercurrents, and steady percussion. Zucker’s presence here exudes a tone more fit for psychedelia, feeling forlorn and introspective in its “what can I do…” ponderings. Another gem arrives with the EP’s lengthiest track, “I’ll Follow You,” which stirs across its six-plus minutes. The “I wanna…” aspirational delivery hypnotizes amidst hazy guitar work, gradually swelling to a more distortion-simmering midpoint and heavy rock send-off, with shades of Sigur Rós in the pulsing guitar work. Fading is a stellar, often climactic rock EP from Land Mass.
